CTO / CEO Services Case Study

UDoTest

UDoTest Need a Fractional CTO and CEO

Smart scale, timely leadership, and a strategic exit that changed the game for at-home diagnostics.

“Having both Bryan and Adam on board helped me grow and scale my company way quicker than I could’ve done on my own towards ultimately getting acquired by Recuro Health.”

— Allison Martin, Founder & CEO, UDoTest

Overview

UDoTest was a Boston-based healthtech company offering B2B at-home lab testing software for insurers, employers, labs, and consumers. Founded in 2013, the company had a simple mission: make preventive health screening more accessible, convenient, and personalized.

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, UDoTest accelerated its evolution, launching one of the first comprehensive employer testing platforms and partnering with the Department of Health and Human Services. Demand surged. But with growth came complexity, along with the need for experienced tech and executive leadership to scale operations and navigate strategic next steps.

Challenges

  • A software platform that needed to scale quickly and securely to meet pandemic demand
  • Lack of senior technical leadership to oversee architecture, vendors, and development
  • Internal bandwidth too limited to handle both daily operations and long-term strategy
  • No in-house expertise in M&A preparation or exit planning

Goals

To match opportunity with execution, UDoTest needed to:

  • Modernize its tech stack and development processes to support scale and reliability
  • Pass security audits and due diligence required for enterprise clients and acquisitions
  • Fill leadership gaps in both technology and corporate strategy
  • Pursue capital raise or acquisition options with the right partners

Solutions

UDoTest engaged TechCXO to deliver targeted leadership across technology and corporate development. Acting as a unified team, Bryan Dennstedt and Adam Boris helped the company level-up its infrastructure and strategy, setting the stage for a successful acquisition.

Adam Boris, CEO Advisor
Recognizing the need for strategic business guidance, Bryan brought in Adam Boris as an advisor to the CEO. Adam:

  • Introduced UDoTest to key leaders in the telehealth ecosystem
  • Facilitated warm introductions to relevant VCs and potential acquirers
  • Provided M&A coaching and negotiation guidance throughout the process
  • Offered third-party perspective and oversight across departments during the transaction

Bryan Dennstedt, Fractional CTO
As fractional CTO, Bryan upgraded the company’s technical capabilities and built a foundation for scale:

  • Migrated UDoTest to a more efficient tech stack and vendor framework
  • Established repeatable development lifecycles and delivery processes
  • Represented the company in all technical meetings with internal and external stakeholders
  • Led security assessments and ensured the platform passed audit and due diligence
  • Provided operational oversight and coaching to the development team

As fractional CTO and strategic advisor, Bryan and Adam formed a complementary leadership team that helped UDoTest scale smart, stay agile, and prepare for the right exit.

Adam brought strategic and capital markets insight to position UDoTest for acquisition, while Bryan led the tech transformation needed to scale quickly and securely.

Adam Boris

Partner, CEO Advisor

Adam brings decades of domain experience in healthcare services, analytics software, and wireless technology, providing services to clients as an interim CEO, COO, Strategic Advisor, and Board Member.

Bryan Dennstedt

Partner, Fractional CTO

Bryan is a hands-on exec with expertise in mobile application development, healthcare integrations, and all aspects of telemedicine and has worked on over 40 engagements in a fractional role for TechCXO.

Outcome

Through TechCXO’s hands-on leadership, UDoTest transformed its infrastructure and positioned itself as a critical solution during the pandemic. The company’s innovative approach and operational readiness caught the attention of Recuro Health, a digital health company founded by Teladoc’s original team.

In 2021, Recuro Health acquired UDoTest, integrating its platform as a key part of its digital medical home strategy. The acquisition expanded Recuro’s capabilities while validating UDoTest’s technology, vision, and execution.

Tech-enabled lift

Upgraded platform architecture and security paved the way for scale, customer trust, and deal readiness.

Strategic exit

The company was acquired by Recuro Health, extending its reach and realizing its vision for personalized at-home diagnostics.

“Having both Bryan and Adam on board helped me grow and scale my company…ultimately (leading to) getting acquired…”
