Bill Bien is a growth-focused CEO and operations executive who helps AI, high tech, deep-tech, and industrial tech companies commercialize innovation and turn ambitious strategies into profitable, scalable businesses.
Over more than 25 years, Bill has helped turn promising technologies into businesses and established businesses into more profitable ones. His experience spans P&L leadership, corporate strategy, go-to-market execution, operational transformation, M&A, strategic partnerships, and technology commercialization across AI/high tech, telecommunications, industrial tech, energy, and climate technology.
But having great technology is one thing; building a business around it is another. The technology has to work, but so do the economics, manufacturing, supply chain, sales model, market positioning, organization, and capital plan.
Bill has spent much of his career bringing those pieces together because innovation creates possibility, but commercialization creates a business.
As CEO of Forever Oceans, Bill led the transformation and commercialization of a deep-tech business combining robotics, machine learning, software, and advanced production systems. He increased production tenfold in 18 months, generated $5 million in first-year sales, and led development of a machine-learning-enabled feeding platform that improved unit economics by 50%. He also raised $45 million in equity and debt during a difficult investment market while reducing costs to extend the company’s runway.
Previously, Bill led Signify’s global startup business, with responsibility spanning sales, marketing, product, engineering, manufacturing, supply chain, logistics, customer support, quality, and finance. He grew the business organically from approximately $60 million to $160 million and initiated an acquisition that increased sales to approximately $300 million, while reshaping the product roadmap and operations to improve profitability and gross margin.
Earlier at Signify, Bill served as Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Strategy Officer, reporting to the global CEO. He helped develop the strategy supporting Philips Lighting’s spin-off from Royal Philips, led global strategy, marketing, branding, digital marketing, CSR and sustainability, and managed an investment and acquisition pipeline that evaluated more than 120 companies. He also oversaw a global organization that led digital campaigns that increased digital sales by 40%, and built new brands and connected-product businesses.
Bill was a strategist and solution sales leader before he was a CEO, with deep roots in high tech and telecommunications. At Cisco, he served in senior strategy and business development roles, ultimately running the company’s strategic planning process. He connected three-year growth planning with a $10 billion budget process and major investment decisions, developed growth strategies for Cisco’s $4 billion service provider and $6 billion commercial businesses, and earlier led consulting and business development engagements that generated $300 million in new sales. He also supported negotiations for, and later managed, a $1 billion strategic alliance with SBC.
At Telstra, Bill served as Vice President of Corporate Strategy, and later CMO for its Enterprise and Government unit. He shaped telecom, broadband, mobile, media, and digital growth strategies and investments across Australia and Asia, negotiated strategic investments and partnerships, and led marketing and business development for the enterprise business. His work generated more than $200 million in cloud-computing pipeline, and helped drive annual growth in a $1 billion mobile business.
Earlier, at Boston Consulting Group, he advised high-tech, banking, and consumer companies on growth, turnaround, and new-market strategies in the United States and Asia. His career has also included serving as CEO of venture-backed networking software company 6connect.
Today, Bill works with emerging technology companies and investors on the questions that turn innovation into growth: Where is the market? What will customers actually pay for? How should the company go to market? What needs to change operationally to make the economics work? And what combination of talent, partnerships, capital, and acquisitions will get the business there faster?
Bill has also served as a board member and advisor to technology and climate organizations and currently advises early-stage companies on commercialization, business models, and go-to-market strategy. His recent work includes AI/high tech and edge-processing applications and devices, giving him direct experience with a challenge facing companies across industries: how to turn rapidly evolving AI/high tech capabilities into products, revenue, and measurable business value.
Bill holds a law degree from Stanford University Law School and a B.A. in Economics and Chinese from The Ohio State University. He has also pursued executive and continuing education in AI/high tech, sustainability, environmental management, and climate policy.
